Why BubbleBum?
- Portable and can be easily stored in a schoolbag/handbag/hand luggage.
- Cheaper than rental of a booster seat from a car hire firm.
- Reliable - it is always in your bag when you need it (or in Granny's car glove compartment).
- Comfortable, it is not made of rigid plastic so is gentle on little legs.
- BubbleBum is more affordable compared to other child safety restraint systems and just as safe!
- BubbleBum appeals to kids who are cool, it is cool to be safe.
Can I fit three seats across the back of my car or do I need to buy a bigger car?
With BubbleBum, you can easily fit three across the back
seat provided that there are enough 3 point seat belts to
restrain the children. You can also fit 2 larger harnessed
car seats and a BubbleBum across the back of most cars.
This is good news for parents of multiple children, lift
clubs and anyone involved in the transport of many children e.g.
school transport & shuttle services.
Do they come in other colours?
We have one colour scheme at present which has been tested by
100 children. 98% of the children (equally mixed boys and girls)
chose the colour scheme.
How do I inflate the BubbleBum and is it difficult?
The BubbleBum inflates in less than 30 seconds by blowing into
the valve at the rear of the seat. When the seat has been inflated
more than twice, it is even easier as the seat tries to self inflate.
Be sure to close the valve when inflated and also when deflated.
Can a child inflate the BubbleBum?
It is not recommended that a child be held responsible for their own
passenger safety. While a child would have the ability to inflate the
seat, an adult should always ensure that the BubbleBum is fully inflated
and that the valve is closed.
Is a BubbleBum safe?
BubbleBum has been tested and approved to the ECE R44.04 standard and
crash tested to meet the USA FMVSS213 standards. As with all car seats,
read the instructions carefully and do not hesitate to email or call us if you have any concerns!
What if my BubbleBum gets punctured?
Any car seat that has been damaged or involved in a crash should be replaced as there
could be damage to the seat which would affect the performance of the seat in a crash.
We have gained our approval R44.04 in the deflated state for piece of mind, but the
seat should not be used if punctured.
Can I use a second hand or used Booster seat and is there an expiry date?
Only if you know the history of the seat and are confident that the seat has not been abused or involved in a crash.
The expiration date for any car seat is maximum 6 years therefore check the age of the seat before use.
What age should my child be to use a BubbleBum?
A child should meet ALL of the following requirements in order to use ANY booster seat:
- Age between 3 to 11
- Weigh between 15-36KGS
- Height up to 135cm or when child's ears are above the back of the vehicle seat.
- It is recommended that you keep your child in the lowest Group car seat until the
maximum weight allowance for that restraint before moving up to the next Group.
Why should I use a Booster Seat?
When children outgrow their forward facing seat (usually around15-18KGS) they should ride in booster seats in the back seat until the vehicle seat belt fits correctly, which is usually when they reach 4 feet 9 inches.
Seat belts are designed to fit adult bodies NOT children. Infants and children need a child restraint system that accommodates their size and weight, and can adapt to cope with the different stages of their development. The three-point lap and diagonal seat-belt used by adults is not designed for children’s varying sizes, weights, and the different relative proportions of children’s bodies. And that's where booster seats come in!
A booster seat does exactly what the name suggests: It boosts your child up distributing the forces of a crash over the strongest parts of the body, with minimum damage to the soft tissues. Child restraints are also effective in reducing injuries that can occur during non-crash events, such as a sudden stop, a swerving evasive manoeuvre or a door opening during vehicle movement.
What is a proper booster seat fit?
1. Sit with hips back against the vehicle seat with knees bending comfortably at the front edge of the seat.
2. Keep the lap belt low and tight on hips.
3. Place shoulder belt across the mid-chest and shoulder.
4. Ensure that a booster seat is secured in the vehicle when not in use as it can become a missile in a crash and cause injury to the other occupants.
Where is the safest place for my child to sit?
A back seat is generally the safest place for a child to ride, while the safest position depends on each car.
While air bags can save lives, kids riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an air
bag comes out in a crash. Frontal airbags should not be used even with a booster seat as they can deploy at
a speed of 300km/h. Lap belts should not be used with booster seats. Booster seats should never be used in
a rear facing vehicle seat, side facing vehicle seat or a jump seat.
Is the cover washable? Can I remove it?
The cover should not be removed as it forms an integral part of the
performance of the seat. It can be surface washed with a mild
detergent and air dried. Do not iron the cover. Do not tumble
dry.
How do I get the air back out when I want to store my BubbleBum?
A helpful tip is to position the BubbleBum on a flat, firm surface
taking care to remove any sharp objects. Open the valve and roll the
BubbleBum to expel air. When you are happy that you can fit it back
into the bag, close the valve and it is ready for storage.
Can the BubbleBum withstand high temperatures?
While your BubbleBum can withstand high temperatures, we recommend
that it is not left in extreme temperatures for prolonged periods of time.
The seat belt is sitting across my child's face, can I put it under her arm?
Under NO circumstances is it safe to place the seat belt under the child's
arm or behind the child. If the seat belt does not fit snugly, your child
is not old enough yet to use a backless booster seat.
Can I use it onboard an aeroplane?
No booster seat can be used with a lap belt therefore they cannot be used
in an aeroplane. However, BubbleBum can be carried on board as hand luggage
as it has no sharp edges and poses no risk to other passengers.
Someone told me that a backless booster seat is as safe as using just a seatbelt... is this true?
No. A backless booster is designed to spread the forces of a crash over the toughest parts
of the child's body using the car seat belt. The seat belt in a car is designed to be used
for adults and a child is not a small adult. Their weight is proportioned differently and
their internal organs risk serious injury if the seatbelt is incorrectly positioned across
the soft abdominal area. They also risk submarining if not securely positioned in the car
seat belt. The greatest incidence of abdominal injury is among children 4 to 8 years old.
Can my child ride in the front seat on their BubbleBum?
It is recommended that children remain in the rear seating position until at
least the age of 13 years old. A child is twice as likely to be injured in a
frontal crash when seated in the front row seating.
Why can't I just use a cushion...surely it is the same thing?
BubbleBum is designed to position the seatbelt correctly in the event of a crash
and prevent submarining of the Child. A cushion will slip out from under the child
potentially causing greater injury to the child by submarining. A BubbleBum holds
the seatbelt in position using positioning clips and has been crash tested for this purpose.
What if my BubbleBum goes down or loses air pressure?
You will be pleased to know that BubbleBum has been approved in its deflated state to
the R44.04 standard. The BubbleBum should always be inflated for use and if it is soft,
simply top up with air. Never use a damaged booster seat. If you have concerns please contact us.
What size is BubbleBum?
I am 13 x 13 x 4.5 inches when inflated.
My child is 3 and weighs 19kg’s. Can he use the BubbleBum?
While we recommend that your child uses a five point harness car seat until the upper
weight limit of the seat, your child is within the weight range to use a BubbleBum. It
is much safer for your child to ride on a BubbleBum than in a seatbelt alone.
Your child must be at least 15kg’s before using a booster seat. Please do not hurry to
move up to the next group of car seats for your child.
What is the preferred age range for BubbleBum?
We feel that the ideal age to start using a BubbleBum is 4 years upwards. This is because
children under this age are more likely to be under the 15kg weight requirement. However,
a 3 year old will be safer on a BubbleBum than in a seatbelt alone.
What is R44/04?
R44/04 is the regulation that all car seats must meet for sale in the EU and other countries
globally. The R44/04 approval means that BubbleBum has been crash tested and meets the EU
standards. This approval can be found on the label on your BubbleBum.
The UNECE stands for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, and they have set
out to create a uniform set of regulations for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations. There
are 52 countries that participate in the ECE agreement, South Africa being one of these countries.
In South Africa, child restraints with ECE R44 certification are deemed to comply to the SABS
Compulsory Specification VC 8033.
What is Regulation 16?
It is a vehicle seat belt regulation. Most
cars are fitted with seatbelts that meet this requirement.
